As much as traffic on a freeway is dreadful, traffic on the Internet is delightful. But with over 60 million web sites on the Internet, you must have a dependable strategy for directing customers to your web site.

    Online Promotion

    Search Engines

Search engines are the “yellow pages” for a web site because over 80% of surfers use search engines to find information on the web. To get the most traffic, list your site with search engines such as Yahoo, Google, and MSN. Smaller search engines also get results from the big three, so customers who visit less popular engines can find you too.

    Looks are Everything

Whether simple or complex, your web site must be efficient and appealing. Be sure your site provides customers with succinct, useful information about how they benefit from your product or service. Do not make the site too intricate; it should be easy to navigate and quick to load a page or customers leave.

More importantly, your web site must look professional. If you are not knowledgeable in web design, hire a good web designer; the investment is worth it by attracting more customers to your web page.

    On-line Promotion

There are many sites on the Internet that allow you to advertise your web site for free or for a small charge. For better exposure, place your ad on 20 or more sites and repeat the process every month.

Banner advertisements can increase customer awareness of your business. A banner ad should be direct, promoting a benefit rather than just the name of the product or service. Try participating in a banner exchange program that connects your web site to other company sites that have similar customer bases.

Affiliate programs offer another opportunity to promote your web site. Affiliate businesses post links to your web page on their sites. But be aware that payment arrangements vary; you could pay a fee based on the number of people who visit your site or on the number of customers who purchase your product.

    Blogs

Bloggers are the new information medium. A blogger writing about your web site is an excellent means of gaining exposure to potential customers.

Technorati Blog Directory provides a listing of blogs by industry; research there to ascertain which blogs might be interested in writing about your business. Send a short, personal email to a few blog writers, describing your web site and asking the blogger to write about it. And offer the writer something in return, for example, a free product or a link back to his blog on your web site.

    Offline Promotion

Make your automobile a moving billboard for your web site. Window decals and bumper stickers are inexpensive ways to advertise your web site. Or spend a few extra dollars for a personalized license plate with your web address.

    Low Tech

Regardless of what bloggers say, people still read the printed page. Run classified ads in newspapers, trade magazines, and free weeklies. Your choice of print media depends on the product or service offered and whether you do business locally or nationwide.
